Credit Scene's

IMPORTANCE OF CREDIT SCENES-

-Film credit scenes place an essential role throughout the film making process, including various keys for storytelling and understanding of the film's intended theme. They provide recognition to the individuals who contributed behind the scenes, as well as serving as a vital storytelling tool that helps bring recognition to the entire production.
-Credits help represent the list of individuals and organizations which serve several key purposes throughout the filming of the movie. Both opening credits and closing credits create a sense of resolution that completes the film. Being integrated with the visual of a scene or sometimes displayed as a sequence of text. Even a template used or a font associated with the film can help interpret the theme of the final film as well as giving recognition to the amount oof hard work put into making the film.

RESEARCH-

- "Vertigo" (1958)
  • The film Vertigo uses a unique opening credit scene that contributes to the dizzying motion that goes along with Vertigo's theme. Involving spiraling patterns that are perfectly set to aid the film's key of obsession and vertigo itself. The intense, shifting of colorful geometric pattern are combined with the haunting swirls that are in the opening credits which create a sense of hypnotic discomfort towards the audience. The text along with the music and scenes, immediately immerse the audience/viewers into a state of mystery and danger which sets the narrative into a spiral of madness and the illusion of "vertigo"
Opening Credit scenes-

-"Se7en" (1995)
  • The film Se7en contains a different more vital form of credits that establish the films dark and gritty tone along with giving the audience a sense of paranoia immediately, immersing more viewers into the distorted visuals and frenetic editing. The flickering text used for the credits act ass a unsettling introduction to the atmosphere of the opening credits. The industrial design used to portray ths sequence, makes the film feel more personal and natural rather than being digitally made which reflects on the intensity of the hard work displayed as well as the character (the killer's) personal nature.
Opening Credit scenes-

-"Sherlock Holmes" (2009)
  • The film Sherlock Holmes is vastly different since its credits are issued toward the end of the film, yet it immediately closes with a tense and fast-paced scene for the credits, which helps see their interpretation of the character himself. The opening helps visualize Holmes' Intellect with the use of slow-motion and tactical sequences as well as the text that assures the viewer that the character is a highly successful and intelligent being. The essence merges the era of a detective with the style of oddness and rational sense for the end credits.

Transitioning into the Cambridge Portfolio Project

PLANS FOR PORTFOLIO PROJECT-

For our portfolio project, we have started organizing how to approach the project. Beginning with "Initial plans" like our genre, and what it would generally consist of, as well as our approach and our final draft. My team consist of Jade, and Carolina. Our goal is to create a well rounded portfolio that can be successfully made into a film opening. In the coming weeks, we will focus on creating a more thought our plan that will help create the vision for our film.

INITIAL PLAN-

-Our plan consists of going for a Mystery genre for this film opening. Even though my initial plan was to create a crime induced horror opening, we all agreed and decided to stick to the mystery genre as it can be a very fun and a broad appeal to various audiences as well as a good formed story can create a sense of intensity within the film opening. My team and i want to focus on the eerie and ominous feeling that comes within a mystery film genre. We intend to focus our film towards a main female character, also bringing and adding a type of female representation for the main focus of the film. Developing the character is an approach i would like to consider as it allows the flow of creativity to be used with each one of my group members. With developing a character it also allows the creation of set design, costume design as it correlates with the characters life itself. As well as creating a relationship with the audience and the film, opening.

APPROACH-

- Our main goal is to set the state of mystery film opening, as the protagonist is made to lose her thoughts into a focus of Static forms taking place with flashbacks and reasonings of what led her into the specific location she is held in. Our main focus for this opening will be lighting as well as mise-en-scene, to create a certain tone for the character. We plan to use mostly close up and medium shots to create tension along with mystery with the opening sequence. Using these shots will also create a sense of appeal towards the scene connecting with the audience. Shots such as extreme close ups, tilts, wide shots, and mid shots help focus as well on the editing techniques with overlaying voices and the lighting of the set. The light is intended to be dim, low lighting along with a rugged overall setting. Our main actor focuses in showing her mental state which is projected within the environment. Developing context for the background, introduces the protagonist and provides context for the story, helping visualize the information viewed and provided.

Portfolio Project Genre #2

GENRE: Mystery-

For my second choice in genre I chose mystery. I found a certain appeal to the genre as it focuses on solving a crime or a puzzle that stimulates the brain, helping an audience  feel active and immersed within the film. Mystery films are often designed as puzzles allowing the audience to act as a “detective” alongside the main character. Typically consisting of a suspenseful, dark, atmosphere.

TARGET AUDIENCE-

-The genre of mystery typically has a target audience that ranges from 15 to 35 years old. Many murder mysteries have a strong appeal to women aged 25-45. Normally this target audience are really crime based fans. Most audiences are pulled by the appeal of psychological challenges, truly making the mind work and solve puzzles, drawing suspense towards the film. A diverse and mostly a mixed gender audience, particularly those people who enjoy intellectual stimulation, become attached to mystery films.

"Joker", 2013 had the biggest target audience for a mystery film from 18-40 years old with 68%

                                                                    mixed genders.

CONVENTIONS WITH CONTENT-

- Mystery films often involve a structured approach to narrative, visual style, and marketing which is designed to engage the audience's interest as well as intellect to build suspense and a puzzling atmosphere. Many key elements include a central crime scene that often involves murder, along with a closed circle of suspects and a protagonist who solves the puzzle through a thorough investigation.

-Visual techniques used within this genre of filming include low-key lighting and high contrast which help create an edgy mood and hides information/clues. Often these films are set in modern cities or isolated gloomy locations. Common themes are explore in the duration of these films, as in searching for the truth, restoration of order, or corruption.

-Many marketing and promotional conventions are explored and used to present the film to the audience. Often they include "strategic information scarcity," cutting off much valuable information so the audience will be clipped with the least information possible and want to explore the mystery of the film. In other words: Teasing the premise while withholding key twists to provoke curiosity. Poster are also used with dark color palettes that normally feature the main character. Some iconic props like a magnifying glass, key, or any kind of weapon are featured in the posters to emphasize the mood as well as creating a sense of "hidden" information.

-Clues are necessary to make mysteries solvable, needing to keep the audience off balance. Many key terms are used within this genre. Red herring means a false clue is meant to mislead, this key term is used to be more innovative with the film, layering the psychological, technological, and even supernatural twists that come within the structure of mystery films. Many mystery films come across other genres and combine together to become a better capture, such as sci-fi, horror, and animation, come to explode in popularity when combined.

NARRATVE-

-Mystery films often include features where a group is isolated, and the hero will mostly deduce the killer. The plot heavily relies on codes (enigma). Which are unanswered questions, clues, or even the key terms like red herring and flashbacks that help build tension. Often, the protagonist is a flawed detective or a private investigator in which they track down the suspect. While the protagonist is considered clumsy the suspect frequently has credible motives and opportunities, showing the intellectual side of thee suspect towards the audience.

FILMS-

                                                                   Vertigo, 1958

-Vertigo made in 1958, uses a psychological mystery of obsession as well as manipulation within the film itself. Which also reveals a central plot as a murder is framed with supernatural possession. It adds a key of a "grand deception" where the audience is mislead  with a cold blooded murder plot alongside it to re-ensure it mysterious sense within the film.

                                                                  Memento, 2000

-Memento made in 2000, drives it mystery through a reverse chronological narrative, which forces the audience to experience the same confusion in which the main character is is also experiencing. The revelation in which the protagonist solved the case, is intentionally made to manipulate the audience as well as himself through memories and notes used to sustain a quest.

Portfolio Project Genre #1

Genre-

The first genre I have chosen to do for my portfolio project is horror. I have chosen this genre because I feel it has a lot of potential to be something good yet challenging to work with at the same time. Horror encompasses various sub-genres that focus on different types of fear, from psychological to blending styles like comedy within the film, which I think could help appeal to an audience to create different transformations for the film.

TARGET AUDIENCE-

The target audience for horror films consist of young adults and teenagers, roughly from 15-25 years old, seeking thrills and adventure along with terror and crime. Male viewers are 55% and 45% for female viewers. Horror evokes strong feelings like dread and fear as well as holding a big topic on the supernatural coming with unsettling atmospheres and shocking suspense that keep the audience on their toes throughout the film. Techniques like jump-scares to deep character connections are used throughout this genre of film.

"It" released in 2017 with the most broadly appearing target audience with 14-50 year old's

CONVENTIONS WITH CONTENT-

-Horror films often hold features like dark and gloomy atmospheres which create a more ominous feel for the audience. The setting for this particular genre consists of dimly lit rooms and dark isolated locations like haunted houses and woods. Often it includes victims that are vulnerable and monsters or villains that can be from the supernatural or humans with unreasonable acts.

-Knowing that horror films are set in bleak locations, there is a usual sense of isolation and confinement in dark spaces. The audience learns to "expect" the expected that comes with horror films, like hearing the wind howling across a landscape and old floorboards creaking with every step, or the vulnerable character somehow tripping on a specific gear that sets of a chain reaction.

-Marketing within this genre try to express the feeling of uneasiness for the audience. Many films came out with posters that contain variation of fusions of codes and there settings and props will be just as menacing to the eye. Clues throughout the poster will be given like a incomplete glimpse of a monster, such as a close up of fangs or a shadow against a wall which reveals throughout the film when it appears on the big screen.

-What gives a horror film its created and intended atmosphere is the music and sound effects. Lots of innovation goes into creating a scary mix of dialogue, effects, and sound. Many familiar sounds that come within these films are Dissonant chords and demonic whispers that help create the unsettling atmospheres and deepen our understanding of the characters. Music is known to enhance the emotional impact of a horror film, sometimes the awful silence in between each footstep can emphasize the characters vulnerability, disturbing the viewer in the process.

NARRATIVE-

-Horror films tap into our deepest fear and anxieties, raising questions regarding our own mortality and aspect of human nature. The narrative relies on action codes which incidents that are often linked to questions about being human and what is natural. Filmmaker sometimes borrow conventions from other genres to expand their options, suing genres like science fiction, war, or even thrillers, to find new ways to cause fear in the audience.

FILMS-

                                                              A Quiet Place, 2018

-The quiet place is a great example of how powerful silence can be in horror films. Creating a sense of deep vulnerability. It amplified tension and created an immersive atmosphere, while transforming the sound into a form of entity that carried the Film.

                                                              The Conjuring 2013

-The poster for the conjuring uses some codes and conventions of horror to grasp the attention of the audience, in turn impacting the emotional state of the viewing for the film. The isolation increases the sense of threat because its occupants will be helpless against the evil forces. The significance of the noose tied to the tree and the casual shadow of a girl is combined to strike fear into the audience, as the dark tone is reinforced by heavy, grey sky and dying leaves across the field. Not only does the poster include an uneasy feel across the movie but also the way the viewing of the film impacts the audience. As they want the audience to experience this nightmare for themselves.
